Exercise can make colon cancer less deadly

Consistent exercise is associated with a lower risk of dying from colon cancer, according to a new study led by Siteman Cancer Center researchers. The study is among the first to show that physical activity can make the disease less deadly. FULL STORY

The Giver premieres at Edison Jan. 7

Cornstarch might have ended the Gulf oil spill sooner

Last year’s attempt to stem the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico by pouring heavy mud down the well bore may have been defeated by an instability that led to turbulent mixing of the oil and the mud. At the time, Jonathan Katz, PhD, professor of physics in Arts & Sciences, had suggested a simple solution to the problem: cornstarch. Experiments described in an article published recently in Physical Review Letters suggest his solution might have worked. FULL STORY

  • Women’s basketball splits pair in Ohio. The No. 4 women’s basketball team split a pair of games at the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop Classic Dec. 29-30 in Delaware, Ohio. WUSTL fell to second-ranked Hope College, 49-47, in a rematch of the 2010 NCAA Division III national championship game won by the Bears last March. The team bounced back with a 71-59 win over Bluffton University in the consolation game.
